What is Asthma?

Asthma is a common but complex condition that affects the airways in your lungs. If you have asthma, your airways may often become inflamed and sensitive, making it harder to breathe. Various triggers such as allergens, certain weather conditions, or even exercise can cause these airways to constrict further, resulting in an asthma attack.

There are three common types of asthma:

Exercise-Induced Asthma

Those who have exercise-induced asthma typically only experience asthma symptoms when partaking in physical activity. This includes running, hiking, and even playing sports.

Occupational Asthma

Occupational asthma is asthma that is associated with the persistent and long-term exposure to chemicals or irritants that cause difficulty breathing, wheezing, and a chronic cough. This form of asthma is sometimes associated with occupational lung disease.

Allergic Asthma

Allergic asthma is what patients may typically think of when they think of having asthma. This condition can be greatly exacerbated by pollen, mold, or other allergens and irritants.

During an asthma attack, you may experience wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, or coughing. While the exact cause of asthma is not known, it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is important to remember that, with the right care and management, you can lead a healthy, active life.

Asthma Symptoms

There are a few common symptoms typically associated with asthma of all kinds, including:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Coughing attacks

The list above is not comprehensive, meaning you may experience other asthma symptoms that we have not listed above. If you are suffering from symptoms of asthma and need assistance, contact our doctors today and take the first step in breathing easier.

Chronic Care Management for Asthma

Your chronic care management plan for asthma will consist of both medication management and lifestyle changes. Our doctors may suggest two forms of medication: one long-term medication that is inhaled to prevent the onset of an asthma attack and one short-term, fast-acting medication that works to relieve symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing on the spot.

Lifestyle changes may include reducing exposure to irritants that you may experience while on the job or inside the home. Our doctors will work with you on an individual basis to ensure you are living the healthiest life possible. We take into account all aspects of your life and teach you about how to manage your asthma efficiently so that, with our help, you are able to live your life without limits.
